Happy November all! It's that special time of year where everything gets cold, sparkly and barren. Crispy leaves on the ground, a bite in the air and a wellspring of reflection as the year comes to a close. Naturally my thoughts turn to my year in gaming and soon there will be my third annual retrospective of everything I've played this year. I know, I know you're excited dear conception of a reader but for now I feel like sharing a screenshot or three from a game I played a few months ago but haven't really talked about around these here parts.
The game in question is Mothmen 1966, the first in a series of 'Pixel Pulp' graphical text adventures made by LCB Game Studio and published by Chorus Worldwide in 2022. Rendered in the manner of the bygone age of stylised, pixellated graphical text adeventures, this game seeks to capture that special something of the long ago in video game development. Of an age that wasn't short of imagination as much as it lacked sheer processing power.
I'll keep my full thoughts for the aforementioned yearly wrap-up coming soon but for now I will say I rather enjoyed this game. This tale of a random assembly of characters under siege from the titular menace works as both a fun story but also as a masterclass on retro aesthetics. The feel of the thing is spot on even if it's mostly the nostalgia talking. The lo-fi art style, sound and presentation all work together to create a quiet sense of unease that persists long after it's relatively short run time.
