When we last left our hapless hero he was besieged by the problems of too many games to play with too little time to both play them and blog about them. A knife edge cliffhanger if ever there was one, surely one day it'll form part of an exciting box set.

So what I have I been doing instead of blogging about games? Well playing them mostly. Diminishing that momentous pile and overcoming all odds only to find there is still an f-tonne of games to play. Still progress is key however incremental. Thus far its been a high ratio of quality to bullshit which is always good when you are force-feeding your brain entertainment.

Let's see. There was BioShock Infinite. That was good. Infamous 2. Also good. Uncharted 3. You get one guess on that one. Zone of the Enders HD and its sequel. Less good. Spelunky. Infuriating but good. Beyond Good and Evil HD. Over-rated and intermittently good. Currently I am progressing through The Last of Us, just your average masterpiece. Possibly good, definitely great.

All games, all the time. Also TV. Also books. Also work and sometimes life. Somewhere down that list comes the blog rising from the cold ashes like a fiery phoenix bird of some description. Possibly a phoenix. Anyway the long and short of it is I'm going to blog on a regular basis again. Huzzah! Probably won't be a daily update, at least not for now but it'll be somewhere between daily and never. Let's set the bar reassuringly low and say a couple of times a week at least. More thoughts incoming shortly.

anime hair and the end of days

I've just completed a game that, in normal circumstances at least, wouldn't generally be my cup of tea. A game remastered and released in 2021 but which originally arrived in 2010 in a somewhat 'adjusted' manner shall we say?. A game I meant to get around to back then but never did and now that I have finally gotten around to both playing and completing it, I'm not entirely sure if I liked it or not. That game is Nier Replicant or to give it it's full re-released title:  Nier Replicant ver.1.22474487139... because clearly the game alone wasn't baffling enough....

horror movie mania 2023

Once more we return to my favourite time of year. The air cools to a brisk chill, the leaves go red and brown in that deeply pleasing way and the evenings grow steadily darker. This year it's slightly different for me as major non-threatening life events unfolded earlier this month but amidst a flurry of recent activity I have found time to sneak in that most precious of all October past-times, the Halloween-adjacent horror movie marathon.  This year I've managed to watch more than a film or two so thought I'd give my thoughts in brief on each one. These are mostly films that have been on my to-watch list for an age with an exception or two and there may be more than one movie called Halloween as it happens, maybe even more than two. To the hot takes...

gaming archaeology

There is an art to playing old games, a   mindset even. A requisite state of mind thats required in order to play through its history. It's often said that you can't judge the past by the standards of the present and this is true to a point. Beyond that point the present can very much creep into your judgements and I think this is fine too as long as you are honest about it. The present moment can indeed cast a harsh light on the past, revered classics may not hold up even if you can still see what made them tick way back when. Such thoughts have come to mind recently as I found myself playing through the original 1987 release of Maniac Mansion .
