hot screenshot action #3

So another summer is winding down around us. The days incrementally getting a little shorter and a little cooler. Hardly in what you might call 'Autumn' territory but there is that sense that it's not too far away now. Gaming wise its been a fairly relaxed few months, been keeping it steady if not busy. As such I have been leisurely making my way through Ghost of Tsushima. As much for the sights and sounds as for the stylish swordplay on offer.

When it comes time for this year's inevitable round-up, I think this game will feature prominently amongst my highlights. Styled upon old samurai films, its a visually lavish experience which really makes me want to stop and enjoy the view when I'm not striking down my foes in martial combat.

It's been a while since I played a game that looked this good even when you're not in the middle of a showcase battle or stage. This is a game worth playing for the quiet moments every bit as much as the loud. An experience that feels rich in content regardless of whether you happen to be doing anything at any given moment.

Vibrant colours, rich detail and a harmonious sense of sight and sound all coming together here. Didn't play this game on its initial PS4 release so can't comment on that version but on PS5 the presentation really is an immaculate showpiece of everything the console can do. There is a superb sense of a particular time and place here all rendered superbly. A true showcase of what sheer graphical horsepower can do when used effectively.

Wondering around a 13th century Japanese island fending off the Mongol hordes shouldn't feel so serene and yet I can't really fault the approach chosen here. The strong emphasis on cinematic presentation coupled with the sound of the breeze rustling the grasses and the trees overhead all makes for an experience that lingers with me after I turn the console off.

Haven't completed the game yet so I will refrain from turning this into a full review. Just some preliminary thoughts as I make my way through the mid-game mark. Sucker Punch Productions have an excellent track record with me, the Infamous games were excellent stand-out efforts in a time full of similar efforts trying to cash in on the open world genre.

Whilst they have moved on from that series, it appears they have not lost their magic touch for creating high quality gaming experiences in this space. Naturally I will be hitting up the sequel Ghost of Yotei at some point but for now I think I'll be happy to steadily chip away at this one. Until next time!

my top 100 games of all time part 1

It begins! You know what? I'm just going to do it. No more procrastination, no more delay, no more shifting the ranking around to accommodate the latest greatest game I've played. No it's time. Time to deliver on a mission I set for myself back in the first glorious age of this blog before everything went dark for a few years. It's happening folks, I am beginning the Top 100 ranking of my all-time favourite video games.  These will be games I've played so if any obvious contenders are not there it's because I never got around to playing them or I did and then forgot about them meaning they probably wouldn't have made the list anyway. It's all entirely my own personal opinion of the games that mean the most to me. It is the sum total of my best experiences in gaming over several decades of playing them. So where better to begin my Top 100 game ranking than by err... the honourable mentions?

completionism 2025: mega edition

BEHOLD... THE MEGA EDITION! It's time o nce again!  With no further ado b ut actually with some ado I am going to recap my personal year in gaming. The scintillating highs, the cratering lows with all points in-between and beyond spoken for as well. It's that most holy of end of year traditions and let me tell you I am both up for it and down for it simultaneously. On reflection I've somehow said the same thing twice there. Alas now's not the time to deliberate on the foibles and quirks of the English tongue! No it's the time for gaming and a super mega f-tonne of it as well! It's been a busy year for me outside of the gaming habit but yet somehow I have managed to squeeze in another fifty or so games. If the old gaming backlog I complain so much about was looking considerably lighter at the end of 2024 then it's positively slender now at the end of 2025. The list is still mostly comprised of 'old' games but yet again more and more curren...

piledriving skeletons

I've talked about it before but Guacamelee! has to be one of the most joyful games I've played in a while. A colourful, funny utterly charming platformer where you take on skeletons as an undead luchador risen from the great thereafter to save the woman he loves. Because that's how he rolls. Seriously though this feels like a game made entirely for me. That of course raises the possibility that somewhere out there someone is tracking every move I make for the purposes of catering to my every whim, which is something that should terrify us all really.
